Wilson Drafts Jardine For 'Pet Sounds' Gigs
September 18, 2006, 4:45 PM ET
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Brian Wilson will be joined by ex-Beach Boys bandmate Al Jardine for four complete performances of the group's landmark "Pet Sounds" album later this fall. The gigs are set for Nov. 17 in Boston, Nov. 18 in Washington, D.C., Nov. 19 in Glenside, Pa., and Nov. 21 in New York.

At deadline, there were no plans for Jardine to perform at two other "Pet Sounds" performances on Nov. 1 in Los Angeles and Nov. 12 in London, the latter of which is being billed as the final show of its type in the United Kingdom. Visit Wilson's official Web site for ticket on-sale details.

Wilson previously made complete "Pet Sounds" performances the centerpiece of his live shows in 2000. In recent years, he has also played the newly finished "Smile" album in its entirety.

Wilson's pairing with Jardine, their first in decades, comes a week after a California judge dismissed portions of a lawsuit against the latter by former Beach Boys bandmate Mike Love. Love had sued Jardine claiming he was the only person legally allowed to perform under the name "Beach Boys" but Jardine had toured anyway with "knockoff bands" using names such as "Beach Boys Family & Friends."

Here are Brian Wilson's tour dates:

Nov. 1: Los Angeles (Royce Hall)
Nov. 12: London (Adelphi Theatre)
Nov. 17: Boston (Orpheum Theatre)
Nov. 18: Washington, D.C. (TBA)
Nov. 19: Glenside, Pa. (Keswick Theatre)
Nov. 21: New York (Beacon Theatre)

SocksVery cool! I wonder if Jardine will sing lead on any songs. Perhaps "Sloop John B" and "You Still Believe In Me" for the Pet Sounds set?

It'd be even cooler if this led to any further collaborations between the two of them.

bretwBillboard also alludes to the timing of this announcement, coming so soon after a Judge's ruling between Mike and Al - it does kinda feel like a slap at Mike, doesn't it? But I agree, this is a good thing, nice to see some fences being mended.
enockssI felt sorry for poor Al at the rooftop reunion, he could hardly get a word in edgewise. At least here he's getting some due respect. Now, will Mike sue Al & Brian for singing together without him?
bretwOnly if they call themselves "The Beach Boys: We're Better Than Mike and Bruce"

Seriously though, with the addition of Al to Brian's "Pet Sounds" concerts, it definitely has the feeling of an "us against them" scenario, doesn't it?

Actually, that kind of made me wonder if the lawsuit not only prevented Al from calling himself a Beach Boy, but also from performing with other Beach Boys. (Altho, I think he did perform with Brian at the Hawthorn landmark ceremony, didn't he?)

bretwNo, the lawsuit is only targeted towards using the name "The Beach Boys" in his band's name when he tours. Al can still appear as a solo artist, and I believe that he can even bill himself as "one of the original Beach Boys" but he can't call his touring band "The Beach Boys: Family & Friends" or any other permeation. And there's nothing that would prevent Al from performing with anyone he wants to.
enockssSo sad that it came to this. How did Mike get so much power anyway ?
bretwBrian sided with Mike during the lawsuit, and voted with Mike in their executive decisions after Carl died. I still can't figure that out. Must be that whole "blood is thicker than water" thing.
enockssAl Jardine's web site also mentions that he will be performing with Brian and his band for the "Pet Sounds" shows in Boston, DC, PA and NY.

I have no doubt that Brian is still very intimidated by Mike. It seems to be Mike's strongest suit: intimidation. It's worked great for him for years.
