NOTE:  So-called "tribute" albums for the Beach Boys began almost from the get-go.  Of course, they weren't originally "tributes" as such, they were simply a signal of the Beach Boys commercial success, and other fly-by-night artists wanted a piece of the action.  The first "real" tribute album was Papa Doo Run Run's 1985 "California Project", and since then numerous other labels and artists have put out a near avalanche of "tributes" ranging from thoughtful, deliberate homages, to radical reinventions, to yes, the inevitable rip-offs.  These kinds of albums exploded in the 1990s and 2000s, and I imagine with the Beach Boys' continued appeal, the stream of these releases will continue.
